Kennon Cove Beach is a serene, east-facing sheltered beach on the Mornington Peninsula, backed by 20–40 m high vegetated bluffs. Its 1.2 km shoreline is centred on a historic 300 m jetty, with calm, clear waters protected by outer reefs. The pier area is a renowned snorkelling and scuba-diving site famous for sightings of weedy sea dragons, rays, and abundant reef fish. Sand flats extend 200 m offshore at low tide, and the beach is best entered at mid to high tide. The adjacent car park, slipway, and picnic area make it an easy, family-friendly day trip from Melbourne.

Know before you go

Logged by the community, confirmed by mods

  • Low risk: Tidal range — sand flats exposed at low tide

Sand flats extend up to 200 m offshore. Swimming and shore entry are only practical at mid to high tide; at low tide you must walk a long distance over shallow water to reach snorkelable depth.

  • Low risk: Boat traffic near jetty and moorings

The central jetty and offshore boat moorings see moderate vessel activity. Snorkellers should stay aware of boats, especially near the pier and the slipway area used by the Flinders Yacht Club and Marine Rescue.

  • Low risk: General beach hazard rating 4/10

BeachSafe classifies Kennon Cove as moderately hazardous (4/10), with potential for rip-like currents near the jetty structure and variable sandbar conditions.
