Kangaroo Reef (East) is a protected green-zone reef off the coast of Bowen at the top of the Whitsundays, renowned for its spectacular channel running through the middle of the reef. This creates a dramatic drop-off with vertical walls encrusted in hard and soft corals. The fast current flushing through the channel keeps waters well-mixed and cooler in summer, delivering abundant plankton that fuels incredible coral growth and fish life. With pristine coral cover and a diverse marine community, this lesser-visited gem offers a true frontier snorkeling experience on the Great Barrier Reef.

Logged by the community, confirmed by mods

  • Moderate risk: Channel Current

A strong current runs through the central channel of the reef. While beneficial for coral growth, it can carry snorkelers away from their entry point. Requires good fitness and awareness.

  • Moderate risk: Stinger Season

Box jellyfish (Chironex fleckeri) and Irukandji may be present during the warmer months in Queensland waters.

  • Moderate risk: Marine Stingers

During the summer wet season, box jellyfish and other stingers may be present in tropical Queensland waters.

  • Low risk: Offshore Location

Open ocean reef location with no immediate shallow refuge. Snorkelers must stay with their boat/charter group at all times.

  • Low risk: Sharp Coral

Contact with sharp coral edges is possible, especially in areas with strong currents. Touching coral is prohibited and harmful.

  • Low risk: Deep Drop-Off

The reef has a steep drop-off along the channel edge, with depth changes that can surprise inexperienced snorkelers.

  • Low risk: Boat Traffic

Boat traffic from reef tour operators and private vessels in the area.
