The ex-HMAS Tobruk, a 127-metre former Royal Australian Navy heavy-lift landing ship, was scuttled in June 2018 just north of Hervey Bay near K'gari (Fraser Island) to create Australia's premier wreck snorkel and dive site. Resting upright on the sandy seabed, the massive steel hull rises from the ocean floor and is already encrusted with colourful soft corals, sponges, and tunicates. Snorkellers can explore the upper decks and superstructure in shallow depths, peering into the cavernous vehicle decks where schools of fish now gather. This artificial reef has rapidly become a biodiversity hotspot in the Sunshine Coast region.

Moderate risk: Strong currents
Tidal currents around the wreck can be strong, especially during tidal changes in the Hervey Bay area. Snorkellers should be experienced in drift conditions.
Moderate risk: Marine traffic
The site is accessed via boat and lies in a shipping channel area. Boat traffic in the vicinity requires vigilance.
Low risk: Depth changes
The wreck structure rises from the seabed at ~28m to decks at ~12-15m. Snorkellers must manage buoyancy carefully around the superstructure.
Low risk: Restricted access
The wreck is only accessible by charter vessel; no swimming or private boat mooring is permitted without a licensed tour operator.
