Inverloch sits on the dramatic shoreline where the tidal outflow of Anderson Inlet meets the Bass Strait at the mouth of the Tarwin River. This dynamic estuary environment offers sheltered snorkeling along the sandbars and seagrass beds inside the inlet, especially on calm incoming tides. The river mouth shifts with the seasons, creating shallow channels and sandy flats that warm up in summer. Bunurong Marine National Park lies immediately offshore, known for its ancient fossil cliffs and diverse reef habitats, making this a fascinating spot for both geology and marine life.

Moderate risk: Outgoing tide current
Strong outflow from Anderson Inlet and the Tarwin River can sweep swimmers and snorkelers out toward Bass Strait on the ebb tide.
Low risk: Shifting sandbars
The river mouth and inlet channels shift frequently, creating unexpected depth changes and submerged obstacles.
Low risk: Boat traffic
Small recreational boats and jet skis use the inlet channel, especially on weekends and holidays.
