Iluka Bluff marks the southern headland of the 2.5 km Iluka Beach, a sweeping stretch of golden sand on the NSW North Coast backed by the World Heritage-listed Iluka Nature Reserve — the largest remnant of littoral rainforest in NSW. Snorkelers can explore the rocky reef platforms at the base of the bluff, where clear coastal waters reveal a lively underwater world. The headland lookout offers spectacular views across the Pacific and is a prime whale-watching spot during winter migration. Patrolled during summer, the beach delivers consistent surf and a wild, natural setting with excellent facilities.

Know before you go

Logged by the community, confirmed by mods

  • Moderate risk: River mouth tidal currents

The southern end abuts the Clarence River entrance, producing strong tidal currents that can sweep swimmers offshore.

  • Moderate risk: Rip currents

Moderate to strong rips can form along the beach, especially near the river mouth and reef areas.

  • Moderate risk: Rip currents (summer)

Rip currents remain a hazard throughout the warmer months from October to April.

  • Low risk: Deep water close to shore

The beach faces deep water with strong tidal movements from the adjacent river mouth, increasing hazard for weaker swimmers.

  • Low risk: Sweeping surf

Open ocean beach break with consistent swell produces dumping waves close to shore, challenging for inexperienced swimmers and snorkelers.

  • Low risk: Rocky reef at bluff

Sharp rocks and reef platforms at the base of Iluka Bluff — the best snorkeling spots — require caution on entry and exit, especially in surge.

Entry

From the Pacific Highway, take the Iluka Road exit and follow it about 25 km to the town of Iluka. Turn onto Bluff Road and follow it to the end where a carpark provides direct access to the beach and the headland lookout. Alternatively, park along the main beach access roads in Iluka.

Parking & facilities

Car park at the end of Bluff Road at Iluka Bluff, plus street parking along the Iluka foreshore. The bluff car park is the most convenient for snorkeling the rocky reef.
