Humpy Island is a secluded continental island in the Keppel Bay Islands National Park, surrounded by shallow fringing coral reefs that offer some of the most accessible snorkelling in the Southern Great Barrier Reef. The island's camping beach opens onto a gently shelving reef flat where hard and soft corals, anemones, and reef fish are abundant just metres from shore. The water is typically calm and protected, making it ideal for exploring the reef ecosystem without a boat tour. With only one designated camping site (max 6 people), the island offers a pristine, uncrowded snorkelling experience within the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park.

Moderate risk: Stinger Season Jellyfish
Marine stingers (box jellyfish and Irukandji) are present in Keppel Bay waters, typically during the warmer months from October to May.
Moderate risk: Marine stingers (box jellyfish)
Potentially dangerous jellyfish may be present in warmer months (November to April).
Low risk: Sharp coral and reef rock
The fringing reef has shallow areas with sharp coral bommies and rocky outcrops that can cause cuts and scrapes. Wear reef shoes and avoid standing on coral.
Low risk: Tidal current across reef flat
Outgoing tides can create currents across the reef flat, particularly at the edges of the fringing reef. Snorkel on the incoming or high tide for safest conditions.
Low risk: Marine park regulations
Marine park zones and protected species regulations apply. Do not touch or disturb marine life. Fines apply for damaging coral.
Low risk: Strong Tidal Currents
Tidal movement through the Keppel Bay Islands can create currents around reef edges and points that may challenge inexperienced swimmers.
Low risk: Remote Island Access
Humpy Island is only accessible by private boat or charter, with no medical facilities or shops on the island.
Low risk: Sharp Coral
Shallow fringing reefs can be sharp — cuts and abrasions are possible if swimmers make contact with coral.
