Horseshoe Bay Beach is a sheltered, crescent-shaped bay on Bowen's northern coast, where a living fringing reef lies just metres from the sandy shore. The shallow, crystal-clear waters (around 1–2 metres deep at low tide) make it one of the easiest spots on the Queensland mainland to access coral reef directly from the beach. Granite rock outcrops frame the bay, while the fringing reef on both sides teems with colourful parrotfish, coral trout, and a dazzling array of hard and soft corals. High tide allows snorkelers to explore into the rocky crevices, while low tide reveals the best coral viewing. Snorkel gear can be hired from the adjacent Horseshoe Bay Resort.

Know before you go

Logged by the community, confirmed by mods

  • Moderate risk: Stinger season (jellyfish)

Stinging jellyfish, including box jellyfish (Chironex fleckeri) and Irukandji, may be present in tropical Queensland waters, particularly during the warmer months.

  • Moderate risk: Marine stingers (seasonal)

Marine stingers (box jellyfish and irukandji) are present in the tropical waters of North Queensland during the warmer months (October to May). A stinger suit is highly recommended.

  • Low risk: Shallow reef at low tide

At low tide, the water depth drops to just 1–2 metres over the reef. Snorkelers need to be careful not to stand on or kick coral, and to avoid scraping against shallow rocks.

  • Low risk: Shallow water at low tide

At low tide the water can be very shallow (1–2 m), requiring care to avoid damaging coral or scraping knees on rocks.

  • Low risk: Slippery rocks

Granite rocks line the sides of the bay; slippery when wet and can be sharp. Wear reef shoes or booties when snorkelling near the rocky outcrops.

  • Low risk: Low tide reef exposure

Snorkelling conditions are best at high tide. At low tide the fringing reef becomes very shallow and coral may be exposed, limiting access and increasing risk of touching coral.
