Horsburgh Island (Pulu Luar), the northernmost islet of the Cocos (Keeling) Islands atoll, offers pristine coral reef snorkelling in a remote marine protected area. Its turquoise lagoon fringes a 1 km² uninhabited island, where shallow reefs teem with tropical fish, sea turtles, and vibrant coral gardens. The calm lagoon waters provide excellent visibility, while the outer reef edges present more challenging conditions with stronger currents. Historic WWII six-inch gun emplacements add a unique cultural dimension to this untouched paradise, accessible only by organised tour from Home or West Island.

Moderate risk: Tidal currents in atoll channels
Strong tidal currents can run through the atoll channels, especially around the northern passages. Best snorkelled an hour either side of low or high tide when currents are weakest.
Low risk: Remote location / limited emergency services
The remote location means emergency medical services are far away. Snorkellers should be self-sufficient and experienced.
Low risk: Outer reef surge and swell
Exposed reef edges on the outer (windward) side of the island can have strong surge and breaking waves.
