Mantaray Bay, on the rugged northern tip of Hook Island, is a snorkeler's paradise nicknamed 'The Aquarium' for its dazzling fish populations. Sheltered within the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, this green zone offers crystal-clear waters teeming with friendly Maori Wrasse, Giant Trevally, Batfish, and thousands of Yellow-tail Fusiliers that have become so accustomed to humans they may swim right up to you. The bay's coral bommies, swim-throughs, and small rocky caves create a maze of underwater habitat, though the coral itself was heavily impacted by Cyclone Debbie and is still recovering. The tiny coral-broken beach is only accessible at high tide, and the bay is a strict no-anchor, no-fishing zone with a two-hour mooring limit. Due to full northern exposure, Mantaray Bay should be avoided in any northerly breeze or swell.

Know before you go

Logged by the community, confirmed by mods

  • Moderate risk: Northerly wind exposure

Mantaray Bay is fully exposed to the north. Even a slight northerly breeze creates choppy conditions and reduced visibility, making snorkeling unsafe or unpleasant.

  • Moderate risk: Marine stingers (jellyfish)

Marine stingers (box jellyfish, Irukandji) can be present in warmer months, typically November to May.

  • Low risk: Tidal currents

Strong tidal currents can develop, especially around the reef edges. The bay is not recommended for overnight anchoring due to current and swell exposure.

  • Low risk: Sharp coral beach

The beach is composed of sharp broken coral fragments that can be painful to walk on. Only accessible at high tide.

  • Low risk: Friendly fish collisions

The fish are very accustomed to human presence and may accidentally head-butt swimmers. While not dangerous, it can be startling.

  • Low risk: Boat Traffic Near Moorings

Vessels and swimmers share the bay. Moorings have a strict 2-hour time limit and anchoring is prohibited.
