Nicknamed the "underwater playground of the coral coast," Hoffmans Rocks is a shore-accessible reef site located 2 km south of Bargara in the Woongarra Marine Park (Great Sandy Marine Park). The site features two large submerged rock formations that have fractured over time, creating natural caverns and swim-throughs to explore. Depths range from 2 m to 10 m, making it ideal for intermediate snorkelers and divers. Hard and soft corals blanket the reef, drawing turtles, bull rays, schools of reef fish, and the occasional eagle ray or reef shark. The rocky platform provides some shelter, but conditions change quickly with wind and tide.

Know before you go

Logged by the community, confirmed by mods

  • Moderate risk: Strong tidal currents

Tidal flow through the rock formations and caverns can create unpredictable currents, especially during outgoing tides.

  • Moderate risk: Changing weather conditions

Wind, swell and rain can quickly reduce visibility and create hazardous surf conditions along this exposed coastline.

  • Moderate risk: Marine stingers (Nov–May)

Box jellyfish and other stingers may be present in warmer months (November to May). Wear a stinger suit.

  • Moderate risk: Marine stingers (jellyfish)

Box jellyfish and other stingers may be present in warmer months.

  • Low risk: Sharp rocks & coral

Entry and exit are over rocky basalt platforms and coral shelves; cuts and scrapes are common without reef shoes.

  • Low risk: Changing weather and sea conditions

Conditions can shift quickly along the open coast; check forecasts before entering the water.

  • Low risk: Rocky terrain and submerged rocks

Two large submerged rock forms with caverns and channels — sharp edges and uneven footing possible when entering or exiting.

  • Low risk: Marine park regulations

Part of the Great Sandy Marine Park; observe sanctuary zone rules and do not touch or remove coral or marine life.

  • Low risk: Slippery rock entry/exit

Access requires scrambling over slippery basalt rocks to enter and exit the water; caution needed especially in swell.

  • Low risk: Changing tidal currents

Tidal flow can create moderate currents around the rock formations and through the cavern swim-throughs.

  • Low risk: Ocean swell

Exposed to ocean swell; conditions can change quickly. Check forecasts before entering.
