Flowing between Hindmarsh Island and the mainland near the Murray Mouth, Goolwa Channel is a unique brackish-water snorkeling zone where the River Murray meets the Southern Ocean. This tidal channel offers snorkelers a rare chance to explore the dynamic mixing zone of freshwater and saltwater ecosystems, with submerged sandbars, seagrass meadows, and shifting channels. Part of the Coorong and Lower Murray region, it is a haven for birdlife and aquatic diversity, best explored during calm tidal conditions with local guidance.

Moderate risk: Strong Tidal Currents
Goolwa Channel is tidal and currents can become strong, especially near the Murray Mouth during tidal exchanges.
Moderate risk: Vessel Traffic
The channel is used by recreational and fishing boats; snorkelers must remain vigilant and stay clear of navigation channels.
Low risk: Variable Water Clarity
Sediment stirred by tides and river flow can reduce visibility, particularly after rain or strong tidal movement.
Low risk: Cold Water Temperatures
Southern Ocean influence keeps water temperatures cool year-round, increasing risk of cold shock and hypothermia.
