Helix Reef is a Marine National Park (green zone) reef in the central Great Barrier Reef, roughly 80 km east-northeast of Townsville. This protected sanctuary boasts excellent coral cover and clear, nutrient-rich waters that attract a dense concentration of marine life. The reef features sloping coral bombies, sand gutters, and a shallow reef edge ideal for snorkelers. It is known for encounters with large bumphead parrotfish grazing on coral, schools of trevally and barracuda, and frequent sightings of white-tip reef sharks. Its protected status has helped maintain healthy coral communities, making it a rewarding offshore snorkel destination for those seeking a less crowded reef experience.
