The spot

Community-maintained

Community contribution: submitted by Daniel

Perched atop the sheer 90-metre Bunda Cliffs on the Nullarbor Plain, Head of Bight is a world-renowned whale-watching lookout rather than a traditional snorkel spot. The sheltered bay below the towering limestone escarpment serves as a critical calving ground for endangered Southern Right whales between June and October. While the frigid Southern Ocean and steep cliff access make water entry unviable for snorkeling, the viewing platforms offer an unparalleled vantage over crystal-clear waters where mothers and calves glide among pristine, empty beaches — a true wilderness spectacle on the Great Australian Bight.
