Haystack Island Reef is a spectacular offshore wall dive and snorkel site roughly 500 metres off the shore of Haystack Island on South Australia's Yorke Peninsula. A massive granite reef wall runs parallel to the island for over a kilometre, rising from a sandy bottom at 22 metres up to about 10 metres in places. The terrain is riddled with caves, swim-throughs, chasms and gorges, while the walls are draped in vibrant red, yellow and orange soft corals and sponges. This remote, open-water site rewards adventurous snorkelers with abundant fish life and crayfish in crystal-clear conditions.

Moderate risk: Strong currents
Tidal currents can be strong around the reef wall and island channels.
Moderate risk: Tidal currents
Strong tidal currents can sweep along the reef wall, particularly during tidal changes.
Moderate risk: Depth and overhead cave environments
Water depth drops to 22 m at the sand line; depth and potential for disorientation in caves requires strong buoyancy control.
Low risk: Boat traffic
Access is by boat only; vessel traffic in the area poses a collision hazard for snorkelers.
Low risk: Cold water temperatures
South Australian waters can be cold year-round, increasing risk of hypothermia on extended snorkels.
