Hayden's Reef (also known as Haydens Rock) is a popular shore-accessible snorkel and dive site off Pebbly Beach in Forster, NSW. The large rocky outcrop sits about 150 metres offshore and drops to depths of 5–10 metres, surrounded by a seaweed-dominated reef that teems with small tropical fish, Blue Groper, and Moray Eels. The site is known for its resident Grey Nurse Sharks, Southern Eagle Rays, Stingrays, and occasional Loggerhead Turtles that shelter in the undercuts of the rock. Its sheltered position makes it a favourite for beginner-level snorkelers, though visibility can vary and swell can be an issue on exposed sections.

Know before you go

Logged by the community, confirmed by mods

  • Moderate risk: Strong Rips and Tidal Currents

Tidal flow around the reef can create rips and strong currents, especially on an outgoing tide.

  • Low risk: Variable visibility

Visibility can drop to 2 metres or less after rough weather or swell events, making navigation around the exposed rock more challenging.

  • Low risk: Swell exposure

The exposed rock and varying depths mean incoming swell can create surge conditions, especially around the rock itself.

  • Low risk: Boat traffic proximity

Located approximately 150 m offshore, the reef can be approached by vessels; snorkelers should be aware of boat traffic in the channel.

  • Low risk: Rocky Entry/Exit

Access to the water involves negotiating rocky shoreline ledges, which can be slippery and hazardous.
