Hat Head Creek (also known as Korogoro Creek) flows through Hat Head National Park on the NSW Mid North Coast, forming a calm, crystal-clear tidal creek that's a snorkeler's paradise. Just before high tide, the water fills with life — hermit crabs scuttle along the sandy bottom, schools of mullet and flathead drift through the shallows, and the occasional octopus hunts among the weed beds. Sheltered by dunes and surrounded by pristine beachfront, this is a gentle, family-friendly spot where the clear turquoise waters offer easy visibility and a peaceful escape from busier coastal beaches.

Low risk: Outgoing tide current
The creek drains rapidly on outgoing tides, creating a current that can pull snorkelers towards the ocean mouth.
Low risk: Wobbegong Sharks
Wobbegong (carpet) sharks are occasionally spotted near the creek mouth and around Hat Head Mountain. Though generally not aggressive, they are well-camouflaged and can be startled.
Low risk: Mangrove roots and debris
Submerged mangrove roots and fallen timber in the creek can be difficult to see in deeper sections, posing a snag hazard.
Low risk: Low water depth at low tide
At low tide the creek becomes very shallow, reducing navigable water significantly and exposing muddy/sandy bottom.
Low risk: Tidal flow current
Water levels and currents change with the tide. Best snorkeled just before high tide when the creek is full and flow is minimal.
Low risk: Oyster shells on creek bed
Sharp oyster shells line parts of the bottom. Water shoes or reef boots are recommended to avoid cuts.
