Haslewood Island's Waite Bay (often called Chalkies Beach) is a secluded Whitsundays treasure featuring the same brilliant white silica sand as neighbouring Whitehaven Beach. Snorkelers can wade straight into gin-clear turquoise water from the northern end of the beach at mid-to-low tide, exploring fringing coral bommies and rocky headlands teeming with reef fish. Without any development, crowds, or infrastructure, this pristine bay offers a true castaway snorkeling experience — accessed only by boat from Airlie Beach or Hamilton Island.

Moderate risk: Marine stingers (jellyfish)
Stinger season along the Queensland coast brings potentially dangerous marine stingers (box jellyfish, Irukandji) to Whitsunday waters, typically peaking from November to May.
Moderate risk: Remote location — no facilities or cell service
The beach is remote with no facilities, lifeguards, or mobile reception. Snorkelers must be self-sufficient and carry their own drinking water, first aid, and communication devices.
Low risk: Tide-dependent snorkeling conditions
Snorkeling at the northern end of Chalkies Beach is best at mid-to-low tide. At high tide, coral bommies are deeper and less accessible; at very low tide, some areas may be too shallow to snorkel comfortably.
Low risk: Southerly wind swell
The bay is exposed to prevailing south-easterly trade winds (especially May–September), which can create choppy surface conditions and reduced visibility.
