Hamilton Island sits at the heart of the Whitsundays, offering a remarkable range of snorkeling environments from the instant-access fringing reef at Catseye Beach to the world-class outer Barrier Reef sites. Catseye Beach's shallow fringing coral gardens are ideal for beginners, with green sea turtles often grazing in the seagrass beds at mid-to-low tide. A short boat ride away, Manta Ray Bay (Hook Island) shelters a calm underwater valley filled with plate corals and friendly fish, while Hardy Reef and Escape Reef on the outer GBR deliver dramatic coral walls, swim-throughs, and encounters with giant trevally, reef sharks, and barracuda.

Moderate risk: Stinger season (jellyfish)
Stinging jellyfish (including box jellyfish and Irukandji) may be present in Whitsunday waters during the warmer months.
Low risk: Tidal currents on fringing reef
Tidal flow can create currents along the fringing reef, especially around changing tides. Best snorkeled at mid-to-low tide when conditions are calmest.
Low risk: Coral and marine stingers
Marine stingers including fire coral and stonefish can be found on the reef. Wearing a stinger suit or reef shoes is recommended.
Low risk: Boat traffic
