Greta Beach is a wild, dramatic slice of Christmas Island's eastern coastline, reached via a 300-metre walk and a steep stairway down a cliff face. This secluded beach is famed for its natural ocean pool that appears at the right tides, sheer cliff backdrops, and its role as a critical nesting site for marine turtles (year-round) and the annual red crab spawning migration. The snorkelling here is best when tides are calm — the reef close to shore offers vibrant coral gardens and abundant fish. Beachgoers should note that ocean currents deposit plastic debris here, and visitors are encouraged to join the beach clean-up to help protect nesting turtles.

Moderate risk: Strong currents and rip tides
Strong currents and rip tides can develop near the boat ramp and reef areas, especially during outgoing tide. Waves can slam snorkelers towards coral.
Low risk: Sharp coral and reef rocks
Sharp coral and rocky reef bombies are close to shore and can cause cuts and abrasions.
Low risk: Marine debris and plastic pollution
The beach acts as a collection point for plastic flotsam and jetsam carried by ocean currents, which can be hazardous underfoot.
Low risk: Steep cliff staircase
The steep staircase access from the cliff top can be slippery when wet and requires care.
