Great Keppel Island's fringing reefs wrap around much of the island's coastline, offering some of the Southern Great Barrier Reef's most accessible snorkelling. A 30-minute ferry from Rosslyn Bay (Yeppoon) brings you to 17 white-sand beaches where you can walk straight into the water and encounter pristine hard and soft corals. Shelving Point Reef sits in a protected bay right next to Monkey Beach — the island's premier snorkel and dive site with 38 coral species. Clam Bay serves as a coral trout breeding ground, while Wreck Beach on the far side hides a 420-year-old brain coral. The protective fringing reef keeps waters calm, making this an ideal spot for families and beginners to explore the underwater world of the Capricorn Coast.

Know before you go

Logged by the community, confirmed by mods

  • Moderate risk: Marine stingers (jellyfish)

Box jellyfish and Irukandji may be present in the warmer months. Wear a stinger suit and check local warnings.

  • Low risk: Outgoing tide currents

Tidal currents can develop around reef edges, especially at Monkey Beach and Passage Rocks. Snorkel at mid-to-low tide and watch for water movement.

  • Low risk: Boat traffic

Some snorkel sites like Clam Bay and Butterfish Bay are accessed by boat or water taxi. Be aware of vessel traffic in channels and near ferry routes.

  • Low risk: Coral cuts and abrasions

Shallow reef areas have sharp coral formations. Avoid standing on coral — use sandy patches to rest. Reef-friendly footwear recommended.

  • Low risk: Sun exposure

Intense tropical sun with limited shade on beaches and walking tracks. Wear reef-safe sunscreen, a rashie or wetsuit, and a hat.
