The Great Detached Reefs are an ultra-remote complex of pristine coral reefs sitting on an ancient fossil mountain range, roughly 161 km off the Cape York coast. Isolated from the main Great Barrier Reef, these reefs receive cooler ocean currents that shield corals from bleaching, creating a vibrant oasis of marine life. With roughly 46 km of reef edge, the terrain includes towering coral bommies on the western side, a protected inner lagoon with giant coral colonies, and deep ocean-facing walls plunging thousands of feet. This is world-class wilderness snorkeling far from civilization.

Logged by the community, confirmed by mods

  • High risk: Extreme Remoteness

The reef is over 100 miles offshore, requiring a 20-hour boat crossing. Emergency medical evacuation is extremely difficult and slow.

  • Moderate risk: Strong Ocean Currents

Strong currents sweep around the outer reef walls and bommies, especially on the ocean-facing side. These can be dangerous for snorkelers not accustomed to powerful flow.

  • Moderate risk: Tiger Sharks & Large Pelagics

Tiger sharks and other large pelagic sharks are frequently sighted in the open blue around the outer reef walls.

  • Moderate risk: Strong Winds & Rough Seas

Trade winds can create rough seas and hazardous conditions, particularly on the outer walls and bommies. Snorkeling quality is heavily weather-dependent.

  • Moderate risk: Open ocean swell and wind

The reef is exposed to the full force of the Coral Sea. Strong winds and large swells can create dangerous conditions, especially on the outer walls.

  • Moderate risk: Strong tidal currents

Strong tidal currents run through the channels between the detached reef and the outer barrier, particularly during spring tides.
