The outer reef sites of the Great Barrier Reef, accessed by boat from the Whitsundays, offer world-class snorkelling on pristine Coral Sea reefs. Hardy Reef — the most visited site — features a floating pontoon (Reefworld) with direct snorkel access to bommies, coral gardens, and drop-offs teeming with marine life. Visibility often exceeds 20 metres, and the sheltered eastern side of the reef provides calm conditions. These are true oceanic reefs, far from shore, where the vibrance and scale of Australia's greatest natural wonder unfold in every direction beneath the surface.

Moderate risk: Marine stingers (box jellyfish & Irukandji)
Marine stingers are present in tropical Queensland waters during the warmer months. Wear a stinger suit provided by tour operators.
Low risk: Outgoing tide currents
Strong outward-flowing currents can develop on the outer reef edge, especially during falling tides. Snorkellers are kept within buoyed safe-swim zones at the pontoons.
Low risk: Ocean swell and wind chop
The outer reef receives swell from the Coral Sea. On windy days, choppy surface conditions can reduce visibility and make snorkelling more strenuous.
Low risk: Sharp coral (shallow bommies)
Coral cuts and scrapes are common if snorkellers drift into shallow bommies. Touching coral is prohibited and harmful to both reef and swimmer.
