Gorgon Reef, also known as Bognor Reef, is a lesser-known outer Great Barrier Reef site in the Northern region, accessible by tour boat from Cairns or Port Douglas. This reef features intricate coral gardens, bommies, and sandy patches that attract a diverse array of marine life. Its position on the outer reef means excellent water clarity, making it a rewarding spot for intermediate snorkellers looking to explore pristine coral formations away from the busier inner reef sites.

Moderate risk: Tidal currents
Outer reef sites can experience strong tidal flows, especially during ebb and flood tides. Snorkellers should be aware of currents that can carry them away from the boat.
Moderate risk: Marine stingers
Marine stingers (box jellyfish and Irukandji) are present in Great Barrier Reef waters from November to May. Stinger suits are provided on tour boats during the stinger season.
Low risk: Sharp coral
Sharp coral formations and bommies are common. Snorkellers should avoid touching the reef to prevent cuts and protect the fragile ecosystem.
