The Goorie Wreck is a deliberately sunk steel vessel sitting within the Roy Rufus Artificial Reef, just a short boat ride from Urangan Harbour in Hervey Bay. Resting at 14–18 metres depth in the protected waters of the Great Sandy Marine Park, this intact wreck has become an encrusted oasis for marine life — covered in soft corals, sponges, and barnacles. Strong light penetration and calm bay conditions make it a rewarding site for experienced snorkellers and divers alike, with resident rays, wobbegong sharks, and schools of tropical fish frequently spotted among the wreckage.

Moderate risk: Depth (14–18 m)
Snorkellers need strong breath-hold ability; the wreck sits deeper than most shore-accessed snorkel spots. Best suited to competent freedivers or scuba divers.
Moderate risk: Strong tidal currents
Hervey Bay experiences moderate tidal flows that can sweep divers/snorkellers away from the wreck. Dive on slack tide or with a guided tour.
Low risk: Boat traffic
The site is accessed by boat and lies near the Urangan Harbour channel. Surface support vessel and other tour boats may be present.
Low risk: Swell exposure
The site is open to ocean swell from the Coral Sea, which can produce strong surge around the rocks on higher-energy days.
Low risk: Sharp rocks
Entry and exit are over volcanic rock shelves; reef shoes are recommended to avoid cuts.
