Situated within Coffin Bay National Park on the southern edge of the Eyre Peninsula, the nearby waters of Golden Island Lookout offer a wild, reef-protected lagoon accessed via a short boardwalk from the carpark. Sheltered from the Southern Ocean by a rocky reef ledge, the shallow lagoon at low tide reveals crystal-clear waters teeming with reef fish, including the iconic blue groper. From the lookout you can often spot dolphins and even sharks (great white and bronze whaler) rounding up salmon schools where two swells collide over the reef — a dramatic natural spectacle. The lagoon itself is a calm, safe snorkel zone perfect for spotting colourful marine life in the Thorny Passage Marine Park.
