Giant Clam Garden (also known as Clam Gardens) is a world-class snorkeling site set in Watsons Bay on Lizard Island, part of the Great Barrier Reef's northern Ribbon Reefs. This shallow, sandy-bottomed bay is home to a dense congregation of giant clams (Tridacna gigas), many over a century old and reaching up to 2 metres in length, their vivid mantles displaying electric blues, greens, and purples. The clams are scattered among healthy coral bommies and gardens of hard corals, with crystal-clear water offering excellent visibility. The site is easily accessible from the shore — just a short walk from the Lizard Island Resort — making it one of the most accessible and spectacular clam-viewing experiences in the world.

Moderate risk: Tropical cyclones
Lizard Island lies in tropical cyclone belt. Cyclones (November to April) can cause sudden hazardous conditions, surge, and poor visibility.
Moderate risk: Marine stingers
Marine stingers (box jellyfish, Irukandji) are present in tropical Queensland waters from November to May.
Low risk: Shallow coral and clam bommies at low tide
At low tide giant clams and coral bommies can be very close to the surface. Snorkelers should take care not to kick or stand on the clams or coral.
Low risk: Boat traffic in Watsons Bay
The area is popular with boats (dive charters, resort vessels). Snorkelers should stay aware of boat traffic in Watsons Bay.
