Giant Clam Garden is a spectacular snorkeling site on the outer Ribbon Reefs of the Great Barrier Reef, north of Cairns. This vibrant coral garden is home to an extraordinary congregation of giant clams (Tridacna gigas), some exceeding a century in age, with brilliantly coloured mantles in electric blues, greens, golds, and purples. The clams are set among dense hard coral bommies, staghorn thickets, and plate corals, creating a kaleidoscopic underwater landscape. The relatively shallow, clear waters make it a world-class snorkel destination where you can hover beside these gentle giants as they filter-feed in the current.

Moderate risk: Tidal currents
The Ribbon Reefs experience tidal movements that can create strong currents, especially during tide changes. Snorkelers should be confident swimmers and check tide conditions before entering.
Moderate risk: Remote location
The site is several hours by boat from the mainland, requiring a full-day tour or liveaboard commitment. Medical emergencies require evacuation coordination.
Low risk: Ocean swell and wind chop
The site is on the outer reef edge exposed to the Coral Sea. Swell and winds can create choppy surface conditions, particularly in winter (June–August).
Low risk: Sharp coral
Sharp coral bommies and staghorn thickets surround the clam beds. Snorkelers must maintain buoyancy control to avoid contact and injury.
