The spot

Community-maintained

Community contribution: submitted by Daniel

Geraldton's Town Beach offers a family-friendly snorkeling experience right in the heart of the city. The protected bay along the Foreshore features calm, shallow waters with a sandy seabed and patches of seagrass, especially around the historic jetty pylons. These pilings attract small fish seeking shelter, making it an excellent spot for beginners and children. The beach enjoys a warm, breezy climate and is part of a vibrant waterside precinct with landscaped walkways, waterpark, and views out to Seal Rock where sea lions are often spotted sunning themselves.

Know before you go

Logged by the community, confirmed by mods

  • Moderate risk: Marine stingers

Box jellyfish and other marine stingers may be present in warmer months along the Coral Coast.

  • Low risk: Summer winds and chop

Geraldton experiences consistent summer winds which can create choppy surface conditions and reduced visibility for snorkelers.

  • Low risk: Jetty pylons and submerged structures

Historic jetty pylons and submerged debris near the jetty area pose a collision risk if not visible. Snorkelers should keep a safe distance.

  • Low risk: Boat traffic

The beach is near Geraldton Harbour and boat ramp areas. Snorkelers should stay within designated swimming areas away from vessel channels.

  • Low risk: Boat traffic near ramp

An elevated boat ramp crosses the western end of the beach — be alert for vessels launching and retrieving.

  • Low risk: Outgoing tide current

Tidal flow across the shallow reef can create a noticeable outward current, particularly around the rock groynes.

  • Low risk: Stinger season (box jellyfish)

Box jellyfish and other stingers may be present in warmer months along the Mid West coast.

  • Low risk: Marine stingers (box jellyfish)

Box jellyfish and other marine stingers may be present during warmer months. Swim stinger-safe and heed local warnings.

  • Low risk: Boat traffic in the bay

Champion Bay is used by recreational boats and charter vessels. Stay aware of your surroundings and avoid marked boating channels.

  • Low risk: Low tide shallow areas

At extreme low tides the water becomes very shallow, exposing seagrass beds and requiring care to avoid stepping on marine life.
