Georges Bay, encompassing Humbug Point and Moulting Bay on Tasmania's northeast coast, sits within the Humbug Point Nature Recreation Area at the southern gateway to the Bay of Fires. This sheltered, lagoon-like estuary offers calm, translucent waters over granite boulder fields and white-sand coves, perfect for temperate snorkeling. The bay's protected gulches — including Boat Harbour Cove and nearby Skeleton Bay — feature tidal pools, rocky reefs encrusted with kelp, and crystal-clear conditions on calm days. The surrounding dry sclerophyll forest and orange-lichen-stained granite boulders create a stunning backdrop, while the area's Larapuna Indigenous heritage adds cultural depth. Access is via Binalong Bay, just 10 minutes north of St Helens.

Know before you go

Logged by the community, confirmed by mods

  • Moderate risk: Large swell / surf conditions

A big swell can roll into the bay, with powerful surf crashing against the points. The coves remain comparatively gentle but outer areas can be hazardous in rough weather.

  • Moderate risk: Storms and rip currents

After storms, kelp and debris are strewn along the wrack line. Rip currents can form near the points and rocky headlands after heavy seas.

  • Low risk: Strong tidal currents at estuary mouth

The sandbar at the mouth of Georges Bay is regularly dredged; tidal flows through the narrow entrance can create strong currents, especially on outgoing tides.

  • Low risk: Southerly swell

Occasional dumping swell can roll in with southerly winds, creating shore break near the entry point.

  • Low risk: Outgoing tide current

The gulch area can have strong outflow during falling tides, particularly near the rocky edges.
