A short drive north of Adelaide lies the enchanting Port Gawler mangrove forest, where you snorkel through winding tidal channels flanked by ancient mangroves with their finger-like pneumatophore roots reaching up from the muddy floor. This magical underwater world sits within the Adelaide International Bird Sanctuary National Park and Adelaide Dolphin Sanctuary, offering a uniquely serene drift-snorkelling experience. The calm, shallow waters reveal a bustling nursery ecosystem—crabs scuttling among the roots, prawns darting through the shallows, and rays gliding over the silty bottom. It's less about colourful coral and more about immersing yourself in a living, breathing tidal forest.

Moderate risk: Murky Water After Rain
Heavy rainfall reduces visibility significantly as runoff clouds the water, making navigation difficult.
Low risk: Tidal Currents
The mangroves are tidal; snorkelling should be planned around slack tide. Incoming/outgoing currents can push snorkellers through channels rapidly.
Low risk: Soft Mud Bottom
The riverbed consists of soft muddy sediment. Wade carefully to avoid sinking and disturbing the habitat.
Low risk: Pneumatophore Roots
Mangrove breathing roots (pneumatophores) stick up from the mud and can scratch bare skin if swimming too close to the bank.
