Garden Island sits in the sheltered Huon River estuary near the D'Entrecasteaux Channel, offering temperate-water snorkelling with surprising biodiversity. Accessed mainly by boat, its shallow waters (average depth ~4.8 m) reveal kelp forests, rock crevices, and sandy patches teeming with schooling fish. The west side provides calmer conditions, while the east side offers more current-swept terrain. This is a quiet, off-the-beaten-path spot for those wanting to explore Tasmania's cool, clear southern waters without the crowds.

Moderate risk: Cold Water Temperatures
Water temperatures average around 16°C — cold even in summer. Prolonged exposure can lead to hypothermia without appropriate wetsuit (5–7 mm recommended).
Low risk: Tidal Currents
The Huon River estuary experiences tidal flows that can create moderate currents, particularly around the east side of the island. Strong outgoing tides may push snorkelers away from the island.
Low risk: Boat Traffic
Garden Island is a popular boating and fishing area with passing vessel traffic, especially on weekends. Snorkelers should stay vigilant and use a dive flag.
Low risk: Restricted Visibility
After rain or wind, freshwater runoff from the Huon River can reduce underwater visibility significantly, making navigation and spotting hazards harder.
