Just a short boat ride from the historic Trial Bay Gaol in South West Rocks, Gaol Reef (also known as Goal Reef) is a rocky reef system rising from 12 metres to a shallow top at roughly 6 metres. This compact underwater pinnacle teems with life — expect swirling schools of baitfish, large stingrays cruising the sand edges, moray eels peeking from crevices, and camouflaged octopus tucked among the boulders. Colourful sponges, soft corals, and an abundance of crustaceans add to the vivid seascape. Access is weather-dependent; the shallow reef top is best explored on calm, low-swell days, making it a favourite intermediate-to-advanced site for snorkellers divers alike.

Moderate risk: Weather-dependent conditions
The shallow reef is only accessible in suitable calm conditions. Swell or wind can create hazardous surge over the reef top.
Low risk: Boat traffic
The site is frequently accessed by dive charter boats. Snorkellers sharing the area need to be vigilant of vessel activity.
Low risk: Rocky reef terrain
Sharp reef edges and boulders with encrusting organisms can cause cuts and scrapes. Careful finning and buoyancy control advised.
