Gabo Island is a wild, remote island 500 metres off the coast of Croajingolong National Park in far-east Victoria, accessible only by boat or light aircraft from Mallacoota. Its snorkeling paradise centres on the clear, sheltered waters of Santa Barbara Bay, where pink granite reefs, rocky coves, and deep sponge gardens teem with colourful fish, sea stars, abalones, sea urchins, and sea anemones. The island's second-tallest Australian lighthouse, built of local pink granite, stands sentinel above. Long-nosed Fur Seals frequently join snorkelers, and passing humpback and southern right whales are sighted during migration seasons.

Know before you go

Logged by the community, confirmed by mods

  • Moderate risk: Remote island access

Access is weather-dependent by boat or charter flight; no ferry service. Stranding possible if conditions change.

  • Moderate risk: Ocean swells and surge

Exposed granite shorelines can experience heavy ocean swells, particularly in winter, creating dangerous surge conditions near rocks.

  • Moderate risk: Remote location

Gabo Island is isolated and accessible only by boat or air charter. Emergency services are far away.

  • Low risk: Changing weather conditions

Winter storms and sudden wind changes can arrive quickly; summer temperatures around 20°C but sea conditions may shift rapidly.

  • Low risk: Strong currents around island

Tidal currents sweep around the island's granite points and reefs; snorkelers should stay in sheltered Santa Barbara Bay.

  • Low risk: Marine stingers

Bluebottles and other jellyfish may be present, particularly during warmer months.
