Stretching along the northern shoreline of French Island in Western Port, this marine national park protects a pristine mosaic of seagrass meadows, mudflats, mangroves, and rocky reefs. The nutrient-rich waters support a remarkable array of birdlife feeding at low tide, while snorkelers can explore shallow seagrass beds and tidal channels teeming with crabs, shell-fish, and small crustaceans. Part of the Bunurong Traditional Country, this remote and wild spot offers a truly off-the-beaten-path snorkeling experience with stunning views across the bay toward the Mornington Peninsula.

Know before you go

Logged by the community, confirmed by mods

  • Moderate risk: Strong tidal currents

Western Port experiences significant tidal flows through the narrow channels, especially near the northern shoreline. Snorkelers must plan around slack tide.

  • Moderate risk: Limited medical access

French Island has minimal medical facilities. Emergency response is by air ambulance. Visitors should carry comprehensive first aid supplies.

  • Low risk: Ross River virus (mosquitoes)

Mosquito-borne Ross River virus has been identified on the island. Insect repellent is strongly advised, particularly in warmer months.

  • Low risk: Snakes on shore approach

Tiger snakes and other reptiles are common on the island. Use care when accessing the water from shorelines and walking paths.

  • Low risk: Variable water visibility

Sediment from tidal flows and weather events can significantly reduce visibility. Best conditions follow calm weather and neap tides.
