Flinders Reef is an isolated oceanic coral reef rising from the Queensland Plateau in the Coral Sea, far beyond the outer edge of the Great Barrier Reef. This remote atoll-like system features a stunning main sand cay surrounded by crystal-clear waters where you can see your anchor 30 metres below. The reef's isolation has preserved a pristine marine environment with recovering coral gardens, nesting green turtles, and seasonal aggregations of tiger sharks and tawny sharks. The main sand cay, topped with a BOM weather station, serves as a roosting site for black-naped terns and other seabirds. Snorkelers can explore the reef edge drop-offs, coral bommies, and sandy channels in exceptional visibility, though the remote location and strong currents demand experience.
