Flinders Reef is a protected marine sanctuary within Moreton Bay Marine Park, located roughly 45 minutes by boat north of Mooloolaba on the Sunshine Coast. This isolated, pristine coral reef system features walls, gutters, caves, and pinnacles teeming with around 100 species of hard and soft coral. With consistently clear water and excellent visibility year-round, it's one of Queensland's most vibrant snorkeling destinations, drawing those eager to swim amid dense sponge gardens and abundant reef fish. Named after explorer Matthew Flinders, the reef offers an immersive open-ocean experience far removed from the shore.

Moderate risk: Open ocean conditions
Located offshore with no land shelter, the reef is exposed to open ocean swells, winds, and currents that can change rapidly. Conditions are weather-dependent and trips may be cancelled.
Moderate risk: Depth range
Snorkeling occurs over depths of 8–20 metres, requiring good buoyancy control and comfort in deeper water. Not suitable for weak or inexperienced swimmers.
Low risk: Boat traffic
Flinders Reef is accessed only by boat, and vessels operate in the area around the reef zone. Snorkelers must remain aware of boat traffic and stay within designated snorkel areas.
Low risk: Currents
Tidal currents can be moderate to strong around the reef structure, particularly near gutters and pinnacles. Intermediate experience recommended.
Low risk: Sea sickness risk
The 45-minute boat ride from Mooloolaba crosses open water and can be rough. Those prone to motion sickness should take precautions before departure.
