Flat Rocks is a well-known snorkelling and diving site within the Bunurong Marine Park on Victoria's Bass Coast, near Inverloch. This intertidal rocky reef platform shelves gently into the sea, creating shallow pools and deeper gutters rich with marine life. The unique sandstone and mudstone formations, sculpted by the Southern Ocean, offer sheltered nooks for exploring. It's a prime spot for observing weedy sea dragons, seahorses, and colourful reef fish in a cool-temperate marine environment. The site is easily accessed from the car park via a short walking track down to the rock platform.

Know before you go

Logged by the community, confirmed by mods

  • Moderate risk: Rough surf and swells

Southern Ocean swells can produce strong surge conditions across the reef platform, especially in winter.

  • Low risk: Rocks and reef at low tide

Sharp sandstone reef and boulders exposed at low tide, requiring care when entering and exiting the water.

  • Low risk: Swell and surf conditions

Exposed to Bass Strait swells; rough conditions can create strong surge near rocks.

  • Low risk: Slippery rocks

Intertidal rocks can be very slippery with algae, especially after rain or at low tide.

  • Low risk: Changing tides

Tidal flow can quickly isolate sections of the platform or create strong currents in gutters. Snorkel on incoming high tide for best conditions.

  • Low risk: Sharp rocks and barnacles

Exposed reef is encrusted with barnacles and mussels that can cause cuts. Wear reef shoes or booties.
