Flaherty Beach (also known as Flaherty's Beach) is a dazzling 7 km stretch of white sand and crystal-clear turquoise water on the western side of Yorke Peninsula, nestled between Hardwicke Bay and Point Turton. Named the 4th best beach in Australia in 2022, its sheltered, shallow waters are warmed by the sun over expansive sandbars that extend nearly 500 m from shore. The beach is so calm that it's considered the 'opposite of a surf beach,' making it a perfect, serene spot for families and beginner snorkelers. A unique natural feature: the beach sits on a limestone sheetrock base, allowing sand to pile up rather than wash away. Visitors can drive onto the beach with a 4WD, but the area is also home to the vulnerable Hooded Plover — marked nests should be respected. No facilities on the beach, so bring your own supplies.

Know before you go

Logged by the community, confirmed by mods

  • Moderate risk: Strong tidal currents

Unusually strong tidal currents are known to run through Investigator Strait around Wardang Island, which can affect swimmers and snorkelers.

  • Low risk: Reef and shallow rocks

The wreck sits on a reef; sharp reef edges and shallow rock formations surround the site and can cause injury.

  • Low risk: Variable visibility

Sandstorms and tidal movement can stir up sediment, reducing underwater visibility significantly.

  • Low risk: Beach-driving vehicles

Vehicles drive on the beach — watch for cars, especially near access points and during long weekends.

  • Low risk: Shifting sandbars

The sun-warmed sandbars create very shallow areas that change with the tide; be aware of shifting depths.

  • Low risk: Hooded Plover nesting signs

Designated nesting sites of the vulnerable Hooded Plover are present between the high water mark and dunes; avoid disturbance.
