Tucked between Dee Why and Collaroy on Sydney's Northern Beaches, Fisherman's Beach is the sheltered sandy gateway to the Long Reef Aquatic Reserve — NSW's first declared aquatic reserve. Snorkelers venture 100 m offshore over rocky reef gardens teeming with colorful fish, rays, and occasional sea turtles, all protected since 1980. The headland backdrop with the iconic red heritage hut makes this a wild, accessible escape minutes from the city.

Moderate risk: Outgoing tide current
Strong tidal flow across the reef platform as the tide recedes, potentially pulling snorkelers offshore. Best snorkeled on an incoming or high tide.
Moderate risk: Swell and surge near reef edge
At the seaward edge of the reef, swells can create dumping waves and surging conditions that make it hazardous for inexperienced swimmers.
Low risk: Sharp reef and rock platforms
Exposed and submerged sandstone reef with sharp edges and sea urchins. Reef shoes recommended at all times to avoid cuts.
Low risk: Boat traffic
The reserve allows some boating and fishing; snorkelers should be vigilant near marked channels and when surfacing away from shore.
