Fish Rock is a small, rugged island rising 2 km off Smoky Cape near South West Rocks on the NSW North Coast, home to Australia's only true natural ocean cave — a 125-metre tunnel that runs straight through the rocky outcrop. Snorkelers and divers are greeted by swirling schools of bullseyes, crayfish in crevices, stingrays, wobbegong sharks, and the star attraction: a large aggregation of critically endangered grey nurse sharks that patrol the cave entrance year-round. The landscape underwater is a dramatic maze of gullies, boulders, and a wide shallow exit glowing with deep blue light, making this one of Australia's most celebrated aquatic sites.
