Fairy Cove is a secluded wave-cut notch in the rugged sandstone cliffs south of Kilcunda, along Victoria's Bass Coast in Gippsland. Access is via a steep, rough track down the cliff face from the Kilcunda Coastal Walk, rewarding adventurous snorkelers with a small, sheltered rock platform and crystal-clear pools at low tide. The cove's position at the base of towering eroded cliffs creates a dramatic, private amphitheatre where the Southern Ocean swell filters in, offering calm conditions on the right day. This is a wild, unpatrolled site — not for the faint-hearted.

No lifeguards, no phone reception in the cove, and remote rescue situation

  • Moderate risk: Rough Ocean Swell

Southern Ocean swells can surge into the cove unexpectedly, creating strong washing-machine conditions

  • Moderate risk: Slippery Rocks

Barnacle-encrusted and algae-covered rock platforms are extremely slippery when wet
