Facing Island's ocean-side reefs stretch along the eastern edge of this sandy island, where the sheltered waters of Gladstone Harbour give way to the open Coral Sea. Here, fringing coral gardens drop off into deeper water, offering clear visibility and a vibrant mix of hard and soft corals. The exposed ocean side catches fresher currents, drawing in reef fish, rays, and occasionally turtles. This is a wilder, less-visited snorkelling experience than the island's harbour side — a true gem of the Southern Great Barrier Reef.

Know before you go

Logged by the community, confirmed by mods

  • Moderate risk: Marine stingers

Marine stingers (box jellyfish and Irukandji) are prevalent in the Southern Great Barrier Reef during the warmer months.

  • Low risk: Ocean swell and currents

Swells and ocean currents can develop on the exposed eastern side, especially with onshore winds. Snorkellers should assess conditions carefully before entering.

  • Low risk: Boat traffic

Boat traffic from Gladstone Harbour and the island's mooring areas can be present year-round.
