Escape Reef is a pristine outer-barrier reef within the famed Ribbon Reefs chain of the Great Barrier Reef, roughly 60 km northeast of Port Douglas. It features a sheltered lagoon side and an exposed ocean-facing wall, offering a stunning variety of hard corals — including delicate branching Acropora, abundant mushroom corals, and boulder corals decorated with colourful Christmas tree worms. Giant clams dot the coral stacks, and fish here are notably unaccustomed to visitors, making for uniquely close encounters. Its relatively deeper position has helped preserve vibrant coral health with minimal bleaching, resulting in a kaleidoscope of sea fans and coral colour.
