Erscott's Hole is the crown jewel of Lord Howe Island snorkeling — a protected intertidal groyne on the western side of the lagoon where a luxuriant garden of staghorn coral thrives in crystal-clear, shallow waters. Home to over 500 fish species and 90 coral species, this marine sanctuary within the Lord Howe Island Marine Park offers otherworldly encounters with tame fish, including the iconic Double Header Wrasse and the chameleon-like Bluefish that shifts from dark green to sky blue. Maximum depth of just 8 metres and excellent year-round visibility make it perfect for snorkelers of all levels.

Low risk: Tidal currents in lagoon channel
The site is within an intertidal zone and can be affected by tidal currents, especially around the reef edge at mid-to-low tide.
Low risk: Sharp coral and reef damage risk
Staghorn coral formations are dense and fragile — snorkelers must avoid touching or standing on the coral to prevent injury and damage.
Low risk: Tour boat traffic
Boat traffic from glass-bottom tour boats operating in the shallow lagoon area requires awareness.
Low risk: Sun exposure
Sun exposure is intense on the lagoon; reflected UV from the water surface increases burn risk year-round, most intense spring through autumn.
Low risk: Galapagos Whaler Sharks
Occasional Galapagos Whaler sharks (harmless, typically 2m) cruise through the hole. They are inquisitive but not aggressive.
Low risk: Stingrays
Bull Rays and Long-tailed Whip Rays rest on the sandy bottom. Snorkelers should avoid stepping on or startling them.
Low risk: Coral Reef Wall
The hole is surrounded by a 3-4m high coral reef wall. Snorkelers should avoid touching or standing on the fragile coral.
Low risk: Galapagos Shark Presence
Galapagos whaler sharks (up to 2m) are frequently seen but are harmless and inquisitive. No known incidents.
Low risk: Mild Tidal Current
The lagoon is sheltered, but occasional tidal current can develop in the channel between the reef and the hole.
Low risk: Stingray Encounters
Stingrays and bull rays resting on the sandy bottom can be startled if stepped on. Shuffle feet when entering.
Low risk: Catfish Swarms
Catfish swarm in large numbers around snorkelers; while not dangerous, they can be startling.
