Eight Mile Creek is a pristine, spring-fed freshwater drift-snorkel run that flows from the crystal-clear Ewens Ponds toward the Southern Ocean coast of South Australia's Limestone Coast. Over roughly 2 km of current-assisted floating, snorkelers glide past submerged limestone ledges, ancient vegetation, and dazzling aquamarine water with visibility often exceeding 15 metres. The water is chilly year-round due to its aquifer origins, and the experience demands solid mask-and-fin competence. This is a truly unique snorkel — a gentle but committed river drift through a landscape shaped by karst geology, best suited to intermediate or adventurous beginner snorkelers with a wetsuit.

Moderate risk: Cold water temperature
Water temperature ranges from 10°C to 15°C year-round; full-length wetsuits are mandatory to prevent hypothermia.
Moderate risk: Catastrophic fire danger closure
The park may close on days of Catastrophic or Extreme Fire Danger. Check CFS ratings before visiting.
Moderate risk: Cold water hypothermia
The water temperature ranges from 10–15 °C year-round. Full-length wetsuit mandatory; hypothermia risk without proper thermal protection.
Moderate risk: Seasonal closure (spring)
Snorkelling and diving are closed annually from 1 September to 30 November to protect the fragile aquatic plant life.
Moderate risk: Drift current navigation
The current is gentle but continuous; once committed to the drift from Ewens Ponds, there is no easy exit until the end point near the coast.
Low risk: Annual seasonal closure
Snorkelling and diving is prohibited from 1 September to 30 November (inclusive) each year.
Low risk: Limited visibility in channels
The narrow shallow channels between ponds can have reduced visibility if disturbed; fins may kick up sediment.
Low risk: Channel current
A gentle current flows through the channels connecting the three ponds, aiding drift year-round. Snorkellers should be mindful of reeds and channel width.
Low risk: Permit requirement
Access requires a pre-booked permit and booking via National Parks SA; walk-up entry is not guaranteed.
Low risk: Submerged limestone and vegetation
Submerged limestone ledges and vegetation can snag fins or cause entanglement for inexperienced snorkelers.
