Egg Rock is a trio of small continental islands sitting about 7 km east of Great Keppel Island, within the protected Marine National Park (Green) Zone of the Southern Great Barrier Reef. This site is renowned for spectacular soft-coral-lined rocky walls, a 10-metre plateau on the western side that drops to over 22 metres, and an extraordinary abundance of large pelagic fish and reef fish — thanks to a complete fishing ban. Schools of trevally, tuna, and mackerel cruise the bommies between the rocks, while giant anemones host vast clownfish colonies. The remote location, exposed conditions, and strong currents make it one of the most thrilling snorkel and dive sites in the Keppels, reserved for experienced snorkelers and divers who join a boat tour.

Moderate risk: Strong currents
Egg Rock is exposed to the open ocean and can experience strong tidal flows through the channels between the islands, making it challenging for inexperienced snorkelers.
Moderate risk: Exposed open-ocean conditions
The site is accessible only by boat and requires calm seas. Swells and wind chop can develop quickly, making conditions dangerous.
Moderate risk: Strong ocean currents
The seaward side can experience significant currents around the bommies and between the three islands, making this an advanced site.
Moderate risk: Offshore distance / boat access only
Egg Rock is located a considerable distance from Great Keppel Island and can only be reached by boat in good weather and calm ocean conditions.
Low risk: Rapid depth changes
The western plateau sits at 10 m and drops sharply to 22 m+. Deep water close to shore requires good buoyancy control and fitness.
Low risk: Remote location
Egg Rock is a remote offshore site with no immediate emergency services. Medical evacuation would require boat or helicopter transport.
Low risk: Deep drop-offs
The western plateau at ~10m drops sharply to over 22m (up to 30m) — snorkellers must stay aware of depth changes.
Low risk: Marine stings (box jellyfish)
Box jellyfish and other stingers may be present in Queensland waters during the warmer months (Nov–Apr).

Getting in
Egg Rock lies about 7 km east of Great Keppel Island, accessible only by boat from Great Keppel Island or Yeppoon on the mainland. Most visitors join a guided snorkel/dive tour from Great Keppel Island (e.g., Keppel Dive & Water Sports) or charter from Yeppoon. Due to its remote location, good weather conditions are essential.
Park at the Rosslyn Bay Marina or Keppel Bay Marina in Yeppoon, then take a ferry or charter to Great Keppel Island. No parking at the site itself — it is an offshore rock formation. Day-trippers should park at the Yeppoon marina precinct (paid parking available).
