Eagle's Nest is a striking sandstone sea stack and wide rock platform within the protected Bunurong Marine National Park on Victoria's Bass Coast, between Cape Paterson and Inverloch. Rock ledges, gullies, and kelp gardens create a rich snorkeling environment where you can spot rays and Port Jackson sharks resting beneath the shelves. The exposed platform is awash at high tide, and a 250-metre-long rock shelf on the eastern side offers excellent shallow-water exploration. Being a marine national park, fishing is prohibited, so marine life thrives in abundance. Best conditions occur with a southerly wind that smooths the chop and when the swell is flat.

Know before you go

Logged by the community, confirmed by mods

  • Moderate risk: Sudden swell change

Swell can change suddenly and without warning, making exit difficult.

  • Moderate risk: Rip currents

Rips can form in the area; assess conditions before entering and only snorkel when the water is flat.

  • Moderate risk: Sudden swell changes

Swell can change suddenly along this exposed coastline; only snorkel when the water is flat.

  • Moderate risk: Unpatrolled beach

This beach is not patrolled by lifesavers; no on-site safety supervision.

  • Low risk: Rocky ledges and gullies

Sharp rock ledges with limpets and mussels can cause cuts; care needed when entering and exiting.

  • Low risk: High tide platform inundation

The sandstone platform is awash at high tide, which can create strong surge conditions near the sea stack.

  • Low risk: Rugged conditions in southerly winds

A southerly wind is almost required to smooth choppy water, but conditions can still be rugged.

  • Low risk: Sharp rocky ledges with limpets and mussels

Rocky ledges and platforms can be sharp, especially when covered with marine growth — care needed when exiting or walking.
