Dynamite Passage is a renowned snorkel and dive site threading through the northern Ribbon Reefs near Lizard Island, part of the remote Great Barrier Reef. This narrow channel between coral bommies is famed for encounters with massive potato cod, friendly Maori wrasse, and clouds of tropical reef fish. The crystal-clear waters reveal steep coral walls draped in gorgonian fans, bommies encrusted with colourful hard and soft corals, and the occasional passing reef shark or turtle. Its protected position within the ribbon reef system often means calm, clear conditions perfect for snorkellers seeking world-class reef biodiversity without the crowds of the southern reef.

Moderate risk: Tidal current
Strong tidal currents can flow through the narrow channel passage, especially during spring tides. Snorkellers should be confident swimming in current.
Moderate risk: Stinging jellyfish
Stinging jellyfish (box jellyfish and Irukandji) are present in northern Queensland waters during the summer months (November to May).
Low risk: Large marine life encounters
The site is a known aggregation area for large potato cod (up to 100 kg) and reef sharks. These are generally docile but can be intimidating for inexperienced swimmers.
Low risk: Swell and wind exposure
Located on the outer barrier reef, the site is exposed to oceanic swell and wind chop, particularly during the wet season (December to March).
