Double Decker Cave is a spectacular two-tiered sea cave and swim-through located off the southern headland of Jervis Bay on the NSW South Coast. Part of the renowned "Docks" dive site, this unique sandstone formation features a lower chamber and an upper chamber, allowing snorkellers and divers to glide through both levels. The cave is adorned with vibrant sponge gardens, gorgonian fans, and colourful soft corals clinging to the walls. Inside, shafts of light filter through the entrances, illuminating schools of Old Wives and the occasional elusive Eastern Blue Devil. The site is sheltered from prevailing winds and offers an otherworldly, cathedral-like underwater experience.

Know before you go

Logged by the community, confirmed by mods

  • Moderate risk: Surge in cave passages

Ocean swell can create strong surge through the cave's narrow swim-through chambers, which can push snorkellers against rocks.

  • Moderate risk: Confined spaces / cavern

The vertical swim-through leads into a cavern with limited exit options. Not suitable for those uncomfortable with enclosed spaces.

  • Low risk: Boat traffic

The site is accessed by boat and is near the main Jervis Bay shipping channel; be aware of vessel movements on the surface.

  • Low risk: Variable visibility

Wind and swell can stir up sediment, reducing visibility significantly — the site is best in calm conditions.

  • Low risk: Cold water thermocline

Temperate NSW waters can have sharp thermoclines; water temps may drop suddenly in deeper sections (12-18°C in winter).

  • Low risk: Swell surge inside cavern

Swell can push snorkelers/divers against walls inside the swim-through and cavern, especially on days with larger ocean swells.

  • Low risk: Sharp reef edges

The rocky reef surrounding the entrance has sharp edges and sea urchins. Care required when entering and exiting.
