Direction Island snorkelling beach is home to "The Rip," a legendary drift snorkel through a deep channel that funnels crystal-clear Indian Ocean water between the coral rim and the island. Rated one of the world's best snorkel sites, this narrow passage delivers a gentle current that carries you over a dazzling seascape of bizarre corals, vibrant reef fish, and the occasional turtle or ray. Part of the Cocos (Keeling) Islands marine park, the beach itself — Cossies Beach — is a pristine slice of white sand with no permanent buildings, providing a true castaway experience. The water temperature hovers between 25–30°C year-round, making it a tropical paradise for strong swimmers and adventurous snorkelers.

Moderate risk: The Rip current
A strong, narrow channel current that flows through the reef passage. Excellent for drift snorkelling but requires strong swimming ability and fins. Not suitable for weak or non-swimmers.
Moderate risk: Remote location
No medical facilities, shops, or phone service on the island. Ferry runs only twice weekly. Bring all food, water, and first aid supplies.
Low risk: Strong tidal currents
Tidal movements through the atoll can create unpredictable currents around the reef edge. Snorkel with a buddy and check local tide conditions.
Low risk: Sharp coral
Shallow reef areas with sharp coral formations. Wear reef-safe fins and avoid touching the coral to prevent cuts and protect the ecosystem.
